The Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer — the world’s first non-mechanical, general-purpose computer — was unveiled at the University of Pennsylvania’s Moore School of Electrical Engineering on February 15, 1946.

John Mauchly and John Presper Eckert, the hardware engineers who designed the computer (known as ENIAC), have been justly celebrated as technology pioneers. Much less well known are the six women who programmed ENIAC and truly brought it to life: Betty Holberton, Jean Jennings Bartik, Kay McNulty, Marlyn Wescoff Meltzer, Ruth Lichterman, and Frances Bilas Spencer.

The Eniac team has grown again, with the addition of Sofia Badalameti, who will be working as chief of staff to Eniac co-founder Nihal Mehta.

Sofia comes from a family of entrepreneurs. It’s even something she studied at the University of Richmond — along with her B.A. in Rhetoric and Communication Studies, she minored in Entrepreneurship and Journalism. Her experience wasn’t limited to the classroom, either: While in school, Sofia also started a successful quesadilla-making business that quickly cornered the market on feeding hungry college students.

This past week, I attended ETHDenver. While no single conference can fully encapsulate a space as broad as web3, it still offered an opportunity to confirm that web3 is alive and well, and to get a sense of what’s top of mind for builders and investors (and yes, Eniac is still looking at crypto deals). This has been a year of uncertainty, inside and outside the venture industry, but Eniac was as busy as ever.

For one thing, we made some exciting additions to the team, with Rifki Zable joining as our Vice President of Finance, and Monica Lim joining as an investor. Both of them have already made Eniac better in countless ways — and we were thrilled to get to know them outside of Zoom, since the Eniac team is back in-person in our New York HQ. We even hosted a few events!

At the beginning of 2022, we did something totally new for Eniac — we launched a form where any founder could pitch us for funding.

The response was thrilling. Over the subsequent months, we received more than 1,000 submissions. We were excited to learn about so many interesting startups, and to meet with the ones that felt like the best fit.

I’m excited to share the news that our portfolio company Vence has been acquired by Merck Animal Health (a division of Merck & Co.). The deal was announced a couple weeks ago, but I wanted to write a bit more of our history with Vence.

I first learned about the company in 2017, during a deep tech-focused tour of Boston. During a partnership meeting with Flextronics, they mentioned a cattle management startup called Vence, and — since I’d spent quite a bit of time digging into the sustainable agriculture space — I was excited enough about the idea that I had to crash their meeting.

Longtime Eniac friends and followers may recall that we started an advice column last year called Ask a Seed VC, where we did our best to answer real questions about fundraising and entrepreneurship.

Our columns covered everything from pitching VCs without a warm introduction, how to answer market size questions about a nascent industry, how much to spend while trying to find product-market fit, how much to try to raise, what it means when investors say you’re “too early” for funding, and whether you should approach seed investors for pre-seed funding.
